Start of Semester
1. How do you envision using art in your classroom?
I envision using art in my classroom to help students express emotions as well as having them do projects to help build their understand of a content area. Art gives students a chance to explain how they see something as well as giving them the opportunity to engage in the material.
2. What do you know about integrated learning / integration?
I know that integrated learning is very important for elementary age students because many subjects are being taken out of public schools. Having integrated learning also helps students relate subject areas to other subject areas.
3. Rate your comfort level in making art, and discuss.
Uneasy 1 2 3 4 5 Comfortable
I enjoy crafting and making art pieces, but am not the best at drawing. I love designing things and expressing my own ideas. I am comfortable using many different materials and love using new materials. I do like having some guide lines rather than a completely open ended project in most cases.
4. Rate your comfort level in analyzing and talking about art, and discuss.
Uneasy 1 2 3 4 5 Comfortable
I feel like I often interpret art wrong, if that's possible. I have my own idea of what an art piece means, but it is often different than what the artist intended for it to be. I do however like analyzing art and giving my opinion about pieces. Talking about art is not my favorite thing, but I can carry on a conversation about art.

End of Semester
1. How do you envision using art in your classroom?
I envision using art in my classroom in an integrated manner. I hope to use art specifically with literacy. I feel like students writings can be supported by artwork, and students artwork can be supported with writing. I love the way these two subject areas integrate with one another naturally.
2. What do you know about integrated learning / integration?
I have learned so much about integration through this course. Integration is when there is one basic theme, that can be interpreted in other subject areas. For example, if rain is the basic theme. For science you could teach about the type of clouds that rain comes from, or how rain occurs. For social studies you could teach about different climates in different parts of the world and determine where in the world the most rain falls. For literacy you could write about rain or use similes or onomatopoeias for rain in a story. In math you could learn how to measure rainfall. For art you could create rain drops or the environment needed for rain. There are a million different ways to integrate many different lessons with multiple subject areas allowing students to make deeper connections and understandings of what they are learning.
3. Rate your comfort level in making art, and discuss.
Uneasy 1 2 3 4 5 Comfortable
After completing this course I feel even more confident in my skill of making art. Although I gave the same rating of comfort level as I did at the beginning of the semester, I feel more comfortable than I did before and more confident in my drawing skills. I have come to understand that my drawings do not have to be realistic to be good and that is something important for my students to know!
4. Rate your comfort level in analyzing and talking about art, and discuss.
Uneasy 1 2 3 4 5 Comfortable
After learning about VTS during this course, I feel much more comfortable analyzing and talking about art. Before, I was afraid I would interpret someone's art wrong, but I now understand that the viewer is responsible for creating the story behind a piece of art. VTS is a great tool that I have learned and hope to incorporate into my future classroom.
